# Introduction to Merops

> Who Merops is for and how it supports cloud portability

Merops is a cloud resource management and migration platform. It is designed for developers who use cloud services and for small and medium-sized businesses that want to change infrastructure or migrate data.

## Make cloud portability easier

Moving data and workloads between providers can require provider-specific tools and specialist knowledge. Merops aims to make that work easier through a shared interface and clear provider guides. It also helps teams discover European cloud providers as part of a more sovereign European digital ecosystem.

European sovereignty is a project objective. A provider choice alone does not guarantee data residency, legal compliance, or that every part of a deployment is hosted in Europe. Check each service's regions, contract, and deployment configuration.

## Current implementation

Merops is designed to support cloud resources broadly. The current implementation focuses on object storage: connect a provider, browse buckets and objects, preview files, create a destination bucket, migrate objects, or synchronize buckets. See [service compatibility](/services/compatibility.md) and the [provider guides](/providers.md).

Database, compute, networking, containers, and functions such as Lambda are future service categories; they are not available through the current Merops workflows.

## Object storage terms

* A **bucket** is a named container in an object storage service. Azure uses the term *container*.
* An **object** is a file and its metadata stored in a bucket.
* A **migration** copies objects from one source bucket to a destination bucket.
* **Synchronization** compares and copies objects according to a direction. Strict synchronization can delete destination-only objects; use it carefully.
